What Is a Mirror Actuator?

A mirror actuator is the small motor and gear assembly that moves a vehicle’s power side mirror. It responds to the mirror control switch and changes the glass position up, down, left, or right. Some assemblies also fold the mirror housing, depending on the vehicle’s design and installed features.

Key Takeaways About Mirror Actuator

  • The actuator uses a motor and gears to move mirror glass.
  • A failed actuator can leave the glass stuck or moving unevenly.
  • The actuator isn’t the same part as the mirror glass or housing.

How Mirror Actuator Works

A mirror actuator changes the angle of power mirror glass after you move the control switch. The switch sends electrical power to a small motor. Gears transfer that motor movement to the mirror backing plate.

Most actuators control two movement directions through separate internal mechanisms. One mechanism tilts the glass vertically, while another shifts it horizontally. A damaged gear, motor, connector, or control switch can affect the adjustment.

During Side Mirror Replacement, the actuator may remain attached to the mirror assembly. The replacement part must match the vehicle’s mounting points and electrical connections. Folding features and built-in signals can also affect part selection.

When we handle a side mirror replacement, we check whether the actuator moves the glass through its normal range. We also inspect the wiring plug and mounting points before fitting the replacement assembly.

Mirror Actuator in Practice: A Real-World Example

A driver’s power mirror glass stays aimed downward after the control switch is released. During a side mirror replacement, the actuator and connector are checked so the replacement mirror can adjust correctly.
